• Have you given enough, opened up enough, cared enough?

I think that I have opened up tremendously to this specific topic. Because I have lived in a shelter before I know how it feels to be in need. Therefore I have put my heart into this project and I have given my all!

• What would you change about this situation if you were in charge?

If I were in charge of this situation, I would take in mind everyone’s opinion and what they have to bring to the table. I would have more ice cream sales and I would have more ways to make money other than sales.

• What are three big issues that create problems that our service is trying to address?
I think that there are not three big issues but one big issue! The big issue that our service is trying to address is the weak funding that is being sponsored to hospitals, for the things that the patient and the families need! As contribution we are going to donate toys to the CHOP so that some kids could at least have a chance to play, and enjoy their time in the hospital.

SERVICE LEARNING...May 20th

On Thursday May 15th we just had a brief meeting on what we were responsible to bring on Wednesday May 21st for our ice cream sale! We had no research to do, and our only homework was to bring in what we were assigned to bring in. I am responsible to bring in paper cups, along with Cheng Xian Zheng.This week I had no moments of frustration, indecision, doubt, or realization that have happened during your meeting, but what we did have is success. I think that our ice cream sale will be a success and a hit through out our school. If enough kids bring in $1 or a brand new/lightly used book for children they can get free ice cream! This is a very tempting offer & I think that it is our best idea yet! Other than this there were no moments of success, because we were assigned to find something else to do for the kids!

Through service learning I have learned the following about the issue of Community Giving:we are helping to make people's lives better! We are helping not just the kids, but the families, and the friends of the kids! I think that I am appreciating this a whole lot more than before.

I have had no values nor stereotypes towards giving back to the community, and I do not now. Therefore, my opinion about my community service experience has not changed! Through service learning I can honestly say that I learned nothing about myself, but more about the nature of mankind! I can see how selfish a lot of other kids are more now, but my opinion nor anything else has changed about my topic. I feel the same about it as I did in the beginning, and I have the same ambition to help others too!

a. What have I learned about our group's topic? I have learned a lot about our groups topic this meeting! Before we started, I thought that we would just be having a book drive. Now I know that it's a lot much more than that! We are helping not just the kids, but the families, and the friends of the kids! I think that I am appreciating this a whole lot more than before. I honestly can honestly say that I learned nothing about myself, but I learned more about the nature of mankind! If I were in charge of this group I would:

-have different ways to make money.
-make the nonactive kids do more work.
-take in mind that my opinion is not the only opinion in the group!

My plan for Thursday's meeting is to just gain light, and progress into what we are going to do to put the next step forward in our project! Something that I found in other groups is that they are going through some of the same problem we are going through, though their group is bigger. Everyone's voice is not being heard properly & the teachers do not control the environment, so there is a lot of commotion, screaming, and yelling. I also found that the teachers in charge of many groups are not being involved. The teachers in my opinion should do more observing, to make sure the kids do their jobs with a slight discipline hand, rather than dictate their jobs. The third thing that I found about other groups is that they are much larger groups. Not a lot of children are in our group, but we still go through the same problems!

What was successful and useful about the meeting was that we all found how we would make money to buy books, clothing, and etc., for the children. The challenges that we faced were the same as usual. They were that some people tried to over-power the others who were speaking by screaming. What needs to be worked on for the next few weeks are that we should start to find more ways to raise money, because their are over one-hundred kids at CHOP, and we will also think about putting up signs! I do not yet know what role I will play in the group, but I know that I will introduce new ideas for the group!

2. PLAN for THURS. May 1 meeting.

I have emailed my group with my plans. My plans are to pt up signs for a bake sale, or an ice cream sale! I think that we could also have a clothing, book, and/or a toy.

I think that our meeting on Monday was one of the best we'll ever have. We gained so much in what we would do. We found how we would make money and we also found what the children in CHOP would need! Yet I do have one question about our mission & our roles in the group! I am not sure what actually our role is, is it JUST TO FOLLOW MRS. MADHI'S RULES??? Well I do not think that we should just have to do this. I think that we should all have just as much a say in what happens in our group as Mrs. Madhi does! Though she is a teacher it still does not mean that she has to dictate our group!

A role that I would like to have in the group is the reporter, I like the idea! I could also take on the role of a Photographer/Videographer.

There are a numerous amount of negatives and a weighing amount of positives in our group! The first negative is that there are groups(clicks) in our service learning group, I think that in the long run this will resolve itself but for now I look at it as a problem! The second negative is that the kids don't agree with everything that comes up, and that's alright, but when we take a vote on what we want to do the winning vote is what we are supposed to STICK TO!!! The last negative is that a lot of kids are already slacking & not doing their homework, which was just to gather information on CHOP. I think that this is an individual problem, and it deals with the kids who are NOT doing their homework, but it is still a group problem!

The first positive is that the kids are looking over their differences & grudges to help the families who suffer from the plague of sick & ill children, and families which live in shelters! The seond positive is that Some, not all, but some of the kids have an open mind to do both shelters & CHOP! The third positive is that their has been cooperation in everyone, and some kids are even speaking up, and debating on what we should do {the kids who don't normally talk}!

Service Learning- March 3-7

I have been trying to find things to do for my independent service learning hours for a long time. On the other hand for a long time people have been telling me that I am way too young to volunteer everywhere that I go... even the Philadelphia public library! For the school wide project, I suggested that we help the homeless, but I can tell that from the responses that I heard from the teacher, & students that this will not happen!

What interest me, is the fact that I could hold the power to help as many as one to over one-hundred people during this project. I would like to help families in shelters, this way I could help as many people as possible. Contacts, I already have. I have a personal contact to the Salvation Army Family Residence Shelter, this way I could talk to people about what they need and how they can be helped! I have lots of research and I know that I can make this happen with the proper support from my school!

Whoever said being a whore was easy, lied, but somebody has to do it! (Tanika Lynch, 2006, jacket summary, Whore) Falling through the black hole of society, and growing up in the hard street of Detroit, Kamone, 14, had to feed three mouths including herself by prostituting around the streets. Since she was left on her own at a young age, and coming from a family of tricks, and pimps, she turned to the only job she had her seen her "mother" do, she started to prostitute. There are four reasons why I absolutely loved this book. The first because it made me scared, second because it made me feel like I was there. The third because it had an ending that I did not expect, and fourth because it had drama, killing, sex, life, love, "love" and suspense!

Kamone was forced to prostitute all of the time, by her pimp Cookie, because she was Cookies' number one business profit! Kamone was lost in this world, born to and abandoned by her poor, white trash, dope fiend, prostitute, HIV infected mother, there was nothing Kamone would not do to get some cheddar. She had to the burden of taking care of her two siblings both under the age of 5. She took drugs to keep her awake during her tricking(which she had become addicted to), was almost murdered, had sex to make money, was raped by numerous men, and was lied to by many! That was until she is set up to be raped, drugged, and left for dead by a scandalmonger, fagot, prostitute, and his/her crew. This made Kamone aware that no one was her helping hand and that she had to make it on her own, and take care of "her kids" herself! This was some of the drama, sex, life, violence, and a little of the suspense I enjoyed in this book.
Kamone planned to go into Cookies apartment and steal her money(a lot of money) under the floor board, so that she could run away with her sister & brother and make a new life. Like every thing in Kamone's life, the plan went wrong! Cookie found Kamone trying to take the money and almost jumped on her. As an instinct Kamone pushed Cookie, and she fell into the stove fire. Instantly, the fire engulped Cookie and her fat self and she burned to a crisp. As Kamone ran out of the apartment, before she would also have to fight for life too, she quickly took the money and ran past the on-call prostitutes. Cookie was the only source of family & money that these prostitutes had in their lives. So, when they found what Kamone had done, accident or not, they chased her down the street! With heels, knives, and other weapons they haul-tailed down the street after Kamone. Just as she was about to get caught she jumped inside an old mans car who drove her to safety & paid for her to stay in a hotel with her siblings. I believe that this was one of the examples of suspense in the book. The suspense in this book reminds me of the book "Of Mice and Men". In this book just before one of the main characters, Lennie, is about to get caught by the angry mob of men, his friend did what was best for him, shot him! These both exhibit examples of violence, drama, sex, and the everyday life of a little girl living at the lower class in todays' society!

Ever read a book that made you scared for the main character? Well, after the set up incident Kamone pushed on with life, thinking that it would soon be over! But soon, she found what every woman wanted, a bad boy with a good heart, Lucci, who is in his early 30's. Kamone was close to death, when Lucci literally picked her up out of the trashy life she was in, and treated her like a queen. Little did Lucci know, his thug passion would not be enough to satisfy a 14 year old Kamone's lustful habits she had obtained! The only thing that Kamone had known to do with men & how to "love" them was through sexual intercourse! So of course, when she met Lucci her first emotional spark with him was the thought of sex! Though she wanted it, and bad, Lucci denied her body. Though Kamone was a caramel skinned, green-eyed beauty, Lucci said "no"! Though Kamone was basically looked at as having the body of and angel, with every curve, he denied! All Lucci wanted to do at this point wa sto help Kamone, and he even helped her to kick the need for those drugs! At this point in the book Kamone had met Lucci's in denial, crazy identical twin brother David! He though that Kamone looked like his mother, that he had killed when he was young. So he became obsessed with her! Not getting into the details, David ended up as the worst person she could have met! Tricking her into getting back into her drug addiction by faking that her was Lucci, her turned tried to turn her life back in the wrong direction. Over time, David almost killed Kamone, turned her back into a druggie, put her siblings at the dangerous hand of crack addicts, and killed her unborn child (Luccis' had to give it up some time)! I felt very scared at this moment in the book, causing my heart to shake & I trembled in my reading space! I wanted the best for Kamone at the end of the book, but I though the worst would come for her! I felt that I knew Kamone and that I could have actually been one of the characters in the book because I felt emotion!

For this meeting (05-15-08) I would like to plan the next thing we could do to raise money or get books, and or games. I think that we should have another ice cream sale, though it should not be as high as the last time. I heard a lot of the kids complaining about how high the ice cream was being sold for, and that they would have bought ice cream and/or more ice cream if it was a lower price!

I think that our past meetings have been great and I have talked to our group about what we could do. I think that our next move may be a book drive or a toy drive for the children at CHOP!

I think that we are doing fantabulous on the CHOP part of our community giving project, though I will be more enthusiastic when we start to help the homeless in the shelters!

Well I do think that the similarities are overwhelming, but they are biased because you cannot see the differences between the two. Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy who told him not to go to the theater, it is an urban myth that Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy. There is no record of that. There is no record whether or not Kennedy's secretary warned him.  JFK wasn't shot once. He was shot twice. Once in the upper back which exited under his neck. He was then shot in the right side of his head above his ear and somehow, the bullet managed to go into the back of the governor in the UPPER back, travel down and exit below his right nipple and hit his knee. These bullets were fired from the sixth story of a building at the east corner, which would give the shooter a bad angle, and instead of the bullet hitting the governor it would have hit his wife. Lincoln was shot once in the back of his head, and was shot from behind. There are also other coincidences with the two presidents. Visit this website to compare John Kerry and JFK. PLANS FOR Thursday. Well I do not want to go to another group but I do not think that our group is going well. At the 1st meeting everyone had to vote on weather or not we would work with shelters and with CHOP hospital, or just to do one. The majority vote was to do both, but Mrs. Madhi decided to nix the vote, and just do CHOP hospital, (and when we were done with CHOP we would do shelters). The year is almost gone now, so by the time that we actually get started, and finish there will be NO TIME to help the people living in shelters. I do not think that this is was fair at all.  What was successful and useful about the meeting? What was successful was that we read a letter from CHOP and found what the kids would need. We also found how we would get the items. what challenges or problems did you encounter?  Well some people do not get along in the group, but we got past that. I also did not like the fact that Mrs. Madhi decided to nix the vote, and just do CHOP hospital, and forget the shelters. What needs to be worked on for the coming weeks? What role will you play in the group? I think that we should have MORE say than Mrs. Madhi because it is our grade. We want to look out for the interest of the families in the shelters, and also the children in CHOP. But we will also be selling icecream, and maybe water ice for $1, or in exchange for a NEW book! We are thinking about new ideas every meeting. I think that there are obvious reasons that we have problems, but we are working towards JUST 1 of or goals. =]

Genetic Mutation -- Cancer

The word cancer actually refers to many diseases, not one. There are more than 100 types of diseases known collectively as cancer. What they are, are an overgrowth of cells. Cancer malignancy, occurs when cells begin to grow and multiply in an uncontrolled way. Normal body cells grow and divide over a period of time until they eventually die. But cancer cells continue to grow and divide and grow and divide. Eventually, they gather to form tumors. Tumors are lumps that can interfere with the body's normal processes. Sometimes cells from a tumor break away and travel to a different tissue or organ. This is called metastasis. But most cancers can be treated and controlled, and many people with cancer get better and lead normal lives. No one really knows why cancer grows in certain people. Scientists and researchers are working to discover why some people get cancer and others do not. This will help them to learn whether cancer can be prevented or not. Doctors do have some ideas about why people may get cancer, though. The main reasons are genetics and certain environmental or behavioral triggers. The tendency to develop some types of cancer is believed to be inherited from parent to child, (the genes you were born with might carry an allel for cancer). For example, if a close relative has had cancer of the breast or the heart, you may be more likely to inherit those type of cancers, even though you may never actually get them. Some behavioral and environmental triggers can cause changes in the body's cells that push them into a cancerous state. For example, cigarettes are known to increase the risk of lung cancer. Too much exposure to the sun can increase the risk of skin cancer. These types of triggers act on the body slowly over time, so the cancers that may result from them don't show up until a person is an adult. That's one reason why teens don't get the same types of cancers as adults do. Doctors do know for sure that cancer itself is not contagious, so you don't have to worry about catching it from someone else or spreading it to another person (but people with certain infectious diseases such as AIDS or hepatitis are more vulnerable to certain cancers). Cancer is also never a person's fault. It's simply not true that a person may have done something wrong to get the disease. This is what I learned about the mutation cancer.

Bigger watched 2 men across the street. They were putting up campaign posters for a man named Buckley. Bigger looked at words “If You Break The Law, You Can’t Win!” that were at the top of the poster. But Bigger knew that a man could win if he paid Mr.Buckley. Bigger looked inside his pockets and found twenty-six cents(i guess that was like $2.00 back then). Gus and Bigger then saw eachother. They watch an airplane write some words in smoke. Bigger wished that he could fly a plane, but was convinced that the "white man" would not let him go that far in life. Gus thinks that Bigger could fly a plane, but only if he he was wealthy(had money) and was not a black person. Bigger thought that white people did not let the blacks do anything. Gus and Bigger were palying and acted like they were white, and like they were in the army trying to keeps the blacks"under control". Gus and Bigger go into the poolhall to see Jack and G. H.. Bigger bourght up the plan to rob the store up the street, Mr. Blum's, but says that Jack, G.H., and Gus are too scared to do it. Jack and G. H. agree to rob the store, but Gus didn't say anything. Bigger said that Gus too scared to rob a white man, but in reality it was Bigger who was scared and blamed it on his friends. Gus still didn't say anything. Then Bigger screamed and cussed at Gus. Gus exposed Biggers plan to balme his friends and says that in fact Bigger was the ont that was "scared". Bigger was mad and he said he was going to hit Gus, but then Gus said he would rob Blum's. They all say that they will rob Blum's at 3:00 when the cops are up the street. They would have 2 watch the doors, and 1 hold him up and another grab the money box behind the counter. G. H. and Gus tooka a walk.

Analysis: I think that Bigger feels that he can not achieve anything in life, espically because he has no money and looked at the poster that said "If You Break The Law, You Can't Win". That was a sign that may have made him feel that you can not do anything unless you have money or/and you are white. When they were playing as if they were white, that was also a sign that blacks were put down in the community because they said the white people won't let you do anything! He felt that he couldn't achieve as much as to fly a plane, and they said that they wanted to keep the blacks "undercontrol" when they played like they were in the army. When Bigger became angry at Gus for not agreeing at first, he was trying to again cover up his weakness. Bigger's attitude towards things that do not go his way are a result of Bigger and the way he feels he has to look to the world. He lashes out with anger for little things, and those are just little cluse to figuring out his character and why he act this way.

The family woke up to an alarm clock ring, and a rat in the apartment room. Ms. Thomas and Vera were horrified, so they sent Bigger to kill the rat. After he killed it, Bigger scared Vera with the rat to the point where she fainted. Then he disposed of the rat. When he came back in, his mother turns all her attentiin to Bigger and hounds him about taking the job with Mr. Dalton. He became angry and him and his mother got into an argument. After Bigger became fed up and left, leaving the door to the apartment behind him to slam shut.

Analysis:
I think that the alarm ring was a symbol of them to wake up to society, and realize that they are going no where living like this. The rat was in a way like Bigger, afraid of one another, but willing to kill to show the strong edifice that they want to put up to the rest of the world. Bigger is afraid to talk about his family's problems because he knows that they depend on him to take care of them. When Bigger slammed the door think that was again him trying to show his power, but it was really him blocking his problems that would soon come to haunt him!

NHD Reflection

My topic for NHD was Freedom of Speech in Schools. I originally was working on a documentary, and my main free speech from the past was going to be the Gobitas papers. My main free speech from the present was going to be about Mr. Romero and the wire being taught in his class. I wanted to relate the two but Mr. Romero couldn't talk about the subject ( totally NOT free speech) because Dr. Davidson was SCARED that me going around interviewing people wouls STIR UP the situation..... WTVR..... I said that I would only interview Mr. Romero by himself, but Davidson still refused. Obvious that he was more worried about saving his butt than one of his stduents an their projects. So for a while I was lost on what I was going to do next, and the teachers didn't know what to do either. Mr. Ackerman told me to write a paper. Some of the things I learned, always work by yourself if you don't think you can pick a good partner, make sure everyone approves of your project first, get research on you topic in broad and in specific and also, start your project before the teacher tells you(maybe the year before, im starting the next years right now)!!!

I f I were if Bigger's position, a black boy killing a rich white woman I would feel very scared. I think that Bigger played his role in the book very criminal like, because it was like he had done it before. He knew what to do with the body and how to dispose of the body. I would have probably freaked out and ran out of the city before the body was even found. This is how I would feel if I were in Bigger's position, a black boy killing a rich white woman.

What are some of the problems that Bigger had with his mother?

Bigger has a lot of problems with his mother. Some of the problems between Bigger and his mother is that his mother wants him to take the job with Mr. Dalton. He wants to get the job but, at the same time he doesn't want to realize that his family relies on him to make the money, in the family and pay the rent. Bigger is also in a problem with his mother because she is scared that his friends Gus, G.H., and Jack will get him in trouble, but the only one who can get him into trouble is him. These are some of the problems between Bigger and his mother.

It would have been useful if I knew Mary likes to drink and get drunk if I were to drive Mary around on the first night. If I were Bigger I wouldn't have drove Mary anywhere else other than to university. Than Mary would not have gone to see Jan, and then got drunk. Bigger would have not had to carry he up to the room, and Mary would not have died. This is why the information that Mary likes to drink and get drunk would have been useful if I were Bigger and had to drive Mary around on the first night.

I devised my own way to deal with Mary being so drunk she cannot walk to her room. My devised plan would be that, I would have left Mary on the steps drunk and then went and told Ms. Peggy. Then she wouldn’t have died. My defense would have been that “I am the driver so I drove her where she asked me", "why should I refuse"? "I didn’t know that she would go and get drunk"! There are a lot of differences between the "white neighborhood" and the "black neighborhood" in native son. The white neighborhood in native son was spacious, the houses were huge lights glowed softly in the windows, and streets were empty except for an occasional car, white picket fences: "the american dream"! The black neighborhood in native son was crowded, people were out side smoking, lots of apartments that were "rat infested", and people masturbated in the movie theatre. These are the differences between the white and black neighborhoods in native son.

300 Word Essay-Topic Essay on Freedom of Speech

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances, these forty-five simple words cause a lot of problems and drama. My topic focuses on the first amendment: freedom of speech. Every American resident and visitor pertains to my topic. All across the world freedom of speech is a definite problem and it is not guaranteed in some countries, but I am going to talk about freedom of speech in America! What happened is the question, but it cannot be easily answered. Freedom of speech has been a guaranteed unalienable right since 1791, and still it has to be challenged to the courts today on how it is used!

I chose this topic because I believe that many of American citizens and visitors are being affected by the first amendment everyday, and are fully unaware of it! Some of them are being limited of their rights everyday and have no idea. What I would like to attain from this project is to become more aware of my first amendment rights, what are my opinions on them, and develop many more.

My topic relates to conflict because there was a conflict many years ago before we were our own country. The people of the first 13 colonies were unhappy with what they could and couldn’t say out of their mouths. As a result they created the first amendment, which protected the right of Freedom of Speech and Self-Expression, this was the compromise. The second conflict is that the first amendment still has to be challenged to the courts on how it is used. After 216 long years, there is still no compromise to this day on that problem. A question in project that I might also want answered is “should the first amendment be narrowed on what we can say even more? Thank you this concludes my three-hundred word essay on my topic of Freedom of Speech.

Religion and Public Schools

I believe that religion, should not be taught in public schools. I will tell you about my opinion. I have 5 reasons why religion should not be taught in school, and one simple fact why evolution should!
The two major issues, related to taking in religion into schools are prayers during the classes and teaching religion. The most common concern about these two issues is the possible outcome. Religion and education are likely to promote a certain religion to the class, which is against the constitutional right of freedom of speech. I believe that prayers should not be done at any public school, since they abuse the constitution and rights of everyone and also because, prayer is a basic right of each person, due to the freedom of speech and expression amended by the Constitution. To avoid problems having to do with the separation of these two subjects, religious education at public schools should remain forbidden, because the public school should not be turned into a religious school. Teaching religion is likely to positively contribute more law suits, money being waited, and time being spent unnecessarily. Religious education should be provided separately, rather than public schools, because it may lead to unwanted things.
Evolution is not a major concern to me because it is simply SCIENCE! I believe that as long as this is being presented as a theory, and not a fact then it can be taught a reasonable choice!
Where exactly we came from no one knows but weather we came from apes or from a god, it should only be taught in homes or as a choice!
